In central Sri Lanka, vast terraced fields enjoy favorable sunlight and warmth. Yet during the dry season, the rivers shrink to shallow puddles. Uneven temporal and spatial distribution of water resources restricts farmers to planting just one rice crop annually.
Now, with the completion of CSCEC’s 17-kilometer canal project, the canal spans 10 villages surrounding Galewela town and irrigates nearly 400 hectares of farmland. The upper reaches of the canal have already begun water delivery. Clear water flows through the over-4-meter-wide, over-2-meter-deep canal, directly into fields for irrigation. Farmers can now grow three rice crops a year.

“Previously, one rice season produced about 1,700 kilograms of rice. With improved irrigation, I believe we can yield around 2,100 kilograms, an increase of over 20%,” shared a farmer from central Sri Lanka. Children make wishes: “We hope people around the world can enjoy the food we grow.”
